Sex, gender and drug development

5th of November 2019 at 4 pm
Wagistr. 12 seminar room 4th floor

Drugs may act differently in women and men. Biological differences between women and men may be caused by sex specific gene expression, by sex specific epigenetic modifications and by interaction with sex hormones. They may lead to sex differences in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. In addition to biology, gender, the sociocultural dimension of being a women or a men, plays a role for drug efficacy, compliance and adherence. Sex and gender contribute to sex differences in drug effects and adverse effects.

Vera Regitz-Zagrosek, FESC, is the founder of the Berlin Institute for Gender in Medicine at Charité and the founding president of the International and German Society for gender medicine. She coordinated the interdisciplinary DFG research group “Sex-specific mechanisms in myocardial hypertrophy” and a number of EU projects in gender medicine and basic research (EUGIM, EUGENMED, GENCAD, RADOX). Vera Regitz-Zagrosek is currently Anna-Fischer-Dückelmann guest professor at the University of Zurich.
